The 350.org Oregon Central Coast and the Newport group of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) are sponsoring a meeting with five speakers about the local effects of climate change at 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm, Wednesday, September 19th at the Newport Public Library.
Climate change impacts and carbon reduction strategies were a major focus at the Oregon Coastal Caucus Economic Summit on August 23rd at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City. The Joint Interim Committee on Carbon Reduction will be meeting on September 25th in Salem.
The 2019 Oregon State Legislature will likely be considering major carbon reduction legislation.
Evan Hayduk, restoration specialist for the MidCoast Watersheds Council, will discuss the Sea Level Rise-Landward Migration Zones project, with a special focus on Newport and Yaquina Bay.
Sonny Mehta, field director for Renew Oregon, will be discussing the upcoming carbon reduction legislation, such as the proposed Clean Energy Jobs bill and how environmental groups will be working to help pass legislation.
Lincoln City Mayor Don Williams will speak from a different perspective about his views on climate change.
Martin Desmond, volunteer coordinator for the Newport group of CCL, will be discussing the results of the local climate change questionnaire and the local efforts to develop a broad based Lincoln County public and private climate change partnership. Bill Kucha of 350.org Central Oregon Coast will be discussing efforts to have the city of Newport endorse the Human Rights and Climate Change poster.
