From Toledo Mayor Billie Jo Smith
The September 11th special election, which will recall or show support for your Mayor, Billie Jo Smith, and Councilors Terri Strom and Deanne Dunlap, is here. It’s too late to mail in your ballots. Ballots must be turned in before 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 11. There is a ballot box in the Toledo City Hall, which is open from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Monday, and from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM on Election Day. Ballots may also be turned in to the County Clerk at the Courthouse in Newport, or put in the drive-up ballot box behind the Court House in Newport.
When you mark your ballot, please note that you need to vote three times. This has been confusing to some voters. NO votes support your Mayor and Councilors.
The actual goal of the recall is to fire City Manager Craig Martin because he held 3 former employees accountable for their unacceptable and contentious behavior and practices. The recall group wants to replace the Mayor and two Councilors with their members because the City Manager can only be fired by a majority vote of the City Council.
So much false and misleading information has been spread by the recall group that it is impossible to correct every claim in a concise manner. Voters should have received a mailing with a yellow insert which presents “the truth” relative to the recall petition claims, and these rebuttals have also been published on NewsLincolnCounty.com.
It is understood that the anger and resentment expressed by supporters of the recall are real for them – but they are misplaced!
Mayor Billie Jo Smith, and Councilors Terri Strom and Deanne Dunlap are dedicated to Toledo. They have worked hard to make our town a good place for everyone. They are being attacked because they refuse to be bullied into making a decision they know is wrong for Toledo. You can demonstrate your support for the hundreds of volunteer hours they have devoted to Toledo by voting NO and turning in your ballot before 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 11.
