Teri Dresler begins work as Interim General Manager at the Port of Newport
The Port of Newport has hired Teri Dresler to fill the role of General Manager on an interim basis. She comes to the Port after a lengthy career primarily in the public sector managing large, complex operations.
Teri was born and raised in Portland, spending all but 7 years of her life in Oregon. She graduated from St. Louis University with a bachelor’s of science degree in social work. After graduating Teri worked at Missouri Botanical Garden in a variety of management capacities before returning to Portland.
Teri managed shopping malls for four years in Portland, Yakima and Wenatchee before accepting a position with the Oregon Coast Aquarium in 1993. Teri returned to Portland in 1995 to work at the Oregon Zoo as Guest Services Manager. The zoo is owned and operated by Metro, Portland’s regional government. After 5 years in that position Teri was recruited to help open the Oregon Garden in Silverton for public access while it was still under construction. Teri returned to Portland and the Oregon Zoo eight months later.
In 2003 Teri accepted the position of Operations Director in Metro’s Parks and Natural Areas department. Following a partial agency reorganization in 2007, Teri was asked to assume the role of Director of Parks and Environmental Services. As the result of a leadership transition at the Oregon Zoo in 2009, Teri was asked to assume interim duties as Deputy Director at the zoo. In 2010 Teri was hired into the newly created position of General Manager of Visitor Venues for Metro. This position is responsible for leadership and oversight of the Oregon Zoo, Oregon Convention Center, Portland Expo Center and Portland’5 Centers for the Arts. In 2014 Teri was asked to assume duties of interim Director of the Oregon Zoo for a two year period. Dresler retired from Metro in October 2016.
Teri is thrilled to be working in Newport and with the Port of Newport Commission and staff. She views the opportunity to work as the Interim General Manager as a chance to draw on her vast knowledge and skills leading and managing operational teams, and working with public boards. “I have a lot to learn about business specific to the Port, and I also have a wealth of knowledge and experience to bring to bear on the opportunities and challenges facing this organization. I couldn’t be happier to have the trust of the Port Commission to work with such a passionate and professional team”.
Port of Newport Commission President Stewart Lamerdin said “The Commission is excited to have Teri on board. She brings a fresh perspective to the position as well as a great deal of practical experience”.
Dresler started her job as Interim General Manager on August 27, 2018.
