Boomers Hike Gwynn Creek Loop Trail

Senior Hike
Gwynn Creek Loop Trail

Some of the most spectacular old-growth Sitka spruce forests on the Coast can be found in this area south of Cape Perpetua. Under the big (six-foot thick) spruce trees, you’ll find lots of orange-brown mushrooms from August to November: delectably edible chanterelles (with orange ribs underneath their caps) and deadly poisonous panther amanitas (with papery white gills underneath).

The Gwynn Creek Loop Trail is part of the Oregon Coast Trail. The trail follows the old wagon road that ran north from Florence. It’s not far above Highway 101. The ocean views are great and the pounding surf drowns out the traffic noise.

This 5.8-mile hike is rated as difficult. The hike will take place on Tuesday, September 4 from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Pack plenty of water, energy bars and a sack lunch.

The cost for this hike is $5.00. The Newport Adventure Van will be leaving at 9:00 am and returning around 5:00 pm. Seats are reserved when payment is made. The 60+ Activity Center is located at 20 SE 2nd Street in Newport, or give us a call at 541-265-9617 for more information.
