Siletz River Under Siege
On Thursday evening, August 23rd, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, Lincoln County Community Rights will present pictures and personal reflections from a tour of the Siletz River watershed. The presentation will be at the OSU Extension Office, 1211 SE Bay Blvd, Newport, and is free to the public.
We are being taught that deforestation and environmental degradation happen in the Amazon or Indonesia, not here. But, it is right outside our door. Thousands of acres along the Siletz watershed have been destroyed by clear cutting. Unsustainable tree plantations, tinderboxes for wild fires, are the only vegetation. Ongoing pesticide use leads to bare soils, erosion, loss of habitat for elk and deer, percolation of toxins, and destruction of the Siletz River. This is what we witnessed. Our watershed, our water, our way of life is under assault. If you would like to see for yourself, to feel what we felt, join us Thursday evening.
