Measure 106 seeks to deny state funding for abortions in Oregon. The costs associated with the resultant child support expenses approach $20 million as reported in The Oregonian online, https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2018/07/abortion_initiative_qualifies.html
Having used low income housing for a period during my son’s early years, I can attest to the prevalence of undocumented men living in community supported housing and resulting pregnancies that sometimes occurred. The costs of these new children were then passed on to the community as well.
Why are the men there, you ask? Because it’s terribly lonely and stressful to raise a child alone. The remittances are insufficient for childcare while working, for food, for rent, for medical care, for clothing, for car insurance and maintenance, etc. Sometimes the guys help with those things, but they are also pretty free to come and go.
Now, I can understand the free market mentality that abhors all such support expenditures. I can also understand the wish to shelter women and children. What I cannot understand is taking away a woman’s choice to limit her exposure to harsh conditions for herself and her family.
I was no less proud than any other American when I lived in that confining situation. No one likes to have to ask for help or complain because it’s not adequate. Let American women make the hard choices they have to make. Don’t put them in a ditch and step on them when they try to get out.
Abortion is legal and it is safe. If your daughter in college can get one, why not a woman on foodstamps?
