“Ocean in Motion”

“Ocean in Motion”
Quilt Guild Raffle

“Ocean in Motion” Quilt to be Raffled

The Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild (OCQG) is featuring an ocean-themed quilt, “Ocean in Motion,” as its 2018 raffle quilt. The seventy-plus members who participated in its construction used shades of blues, greens, and whites. The construction features pieced blocks, needle-turn applique, and crystals to capture the beauty and power of the ocean.

The wall quilt (53” wide by 64” high) is a true Lincoln County product. It was designed by Ruth Hutmacher, Newport, and Nan Scott, Yachats. It was then professionally quilted by Lisa Taylor of Waldport and embellished with crystals by JoAnne Ballantyne of Lincoln City. Their inspiration came from the famous 1829 woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, “The Great Wave at Kanagawa.”

Tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5 and are available from OCQG members, via e-mail at raffle@oregoncoastalquilters.org, or at the guild’s annual show, “Quilts by the Sea,” which will be August 3 and 4 at the Newport Recreation Center. The winning ticket will be drawn the afternoon of August 4, but ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Admission to Quilts by the Sea is $6. About 300 quilts will be on display. Viewers will have the opportunity to pick their own favorite quilt as well as to bid on a silent auction of small quilts and to participate in other enjoyable activities. A Quilters’ Café will be operated by a local 4-H group.

OCQG is a non-profit organization founded in 1991. Goals of the group are to promote fellowship among quilters; to promote knowledge and appreciation of quilts and quilt making; and to sponsor and support quilting activities. Guild members make and donate hundreds of quilts and other handmade articles to various Lincoln County organizations every year. The almost 200 members of OCQG live throughout Lincoln County and beyond. Additional information about the guild and the annual quilt show is on their website, www.oregoncoastalquilters.org.
