This July 4th Newport Park & Recreation Department teams up with NW Pickleball Veterans to present pickleball play at Frank Wade Park beginning 9AM with lots of courts in action. In 2015, Recreation Sports Supervisor, Mike Cavanaugh, joined volunteers from Newport Pickleball Club to lay out courts at Wade Park and expand already-successful daily indoor play at Newport’s Recreation Center. By a generous donation from USAPA NW Oregon, new nets were supplied and rolling net sets upgraded expansion to three courts at the Rec Center.
Wildly popular among retirees and seniors, Pickleball has seen huge annual growth nationally as former tennis players return or switch to the more accommodating Pickleball played on smaller courts with graphite paddles and wiffle balls. Most senior retirement areas now convert tennis courts to pickleball and find big crowds flock to play this engaging and fast-paced activity…even with some typical age-related challenges almost anyone can play with quick adaptation. Many grandparents play with grandkids and most middle schools now play indoors in smaller gyms as a P.E. sport. Nearby Oregon State University has been the national collegiate champions for 9 years straight in Corvallis.
July 4th activities start at 9AM at Frank Wade Park off 12th and Hwy 101. There will be a challenge Court for advanced players plus a Beginners Clinic and loaner paddles will be on hand. Oldies rock-n-roll, tasty munchies, and juices will be available and then followed with prizes and BBQ served at 11:30. No reservations required. Just show up for a fun morning at the Coast!
