In July of 2015, Hashimoto visited DPL with the Evergreen String Quartet, and now returns with a new solo program. The music will span three centuries and feature three living composers, including two Northwest composers. You will hear a searing lament (Alan Hovhaness’ Chahagir), a peaceful reflection on the beauty of nature (Ayumi Okada’s In the Shade of an Acacia Tree), a sparkling and lighthearted viola showpiece (Max Reger’s Suite for Solo Viola in D major), a wacky, tongue-in-cheek exploration of the different sound effects that the viola can produce (Garth Knox’s Viola Spaces), and a groovy, driving piece that transforms the viola into an electric guitar (Kenji Bunch’s The Three Gs). At the centerpiece of the program is one of the most soulful and moving works of music ever written, J. S. Bach’s Chaconne.

Rose Hashimoto was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. She began her musical education as a pianist at the age of four, and started playing the viola when she was eight. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School and a Master of Music and Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College The New School for Music. Upon her graduation from Mannes, she was the recipient of the George and Elizabeth Gregory Award for Excellence in Performance. As a winner of the Mannes concerto competition, Rose performed the Schnittke Viola Concerto with the Mannes Orchestra. Rose loves performing music in unusual settings, and she is always searching for ways to create concert experiences that are more accessible, informal, and enjoyable for people of all ages and backgrounds.
