Celebrating a year without helicopter or airplane pesticide spraying in Lincoln County

From: Janice Kenyon

As Wednesday, June 6th, Lincoln County ordinance 21-177 will be a year old. Ordinance 21-177 is the ban on aerial spray of pesticides. This means we have had a year without helicopters unloading toxic chemicals into our air, soil and water… a year of relief for this place we call home; a year for the web of nature to recoup a little; a year for our unborn, human and more, to grow outside such toxic soup. Of course, there is more to do. Much more.

It is also a moment to celebrate. Every day that 21-177 stays in place is a victory for salamanders, salmon smolts, soil microbes and us. The web of life has no voice of its own, and the voters of Lincoln County stepped up to speak for life. When the individuals of a community come together even for a moment, they become something greater, capable of amazing feats. That is our victory. We are the only county in the country to pass such a ban on aerial spray.

We should take a moment and celebrate the fact that we have taken a step to re-establish a sacred trust with nature. We should celebrate our opening a window just a crack to let in light where there is darkness. We should celebrate…well, US!

Lincoln County Community Rights will be celebrating at Bier One, Newport, Thursday, June 7, 6:30 – 8:30 PM. There will be a cake with one candle. You are welcome to help keep it lit.
