State officials say that nearly 11 million dollars is going toward the construction of 110 new affordable housing units in Newport. It will be called Surf View Village. The organization coordinating the construction is Commonwealth Development Corporation of America.
According to a news release from the state, there will be 24 one bedroom units, 42 two bedroom units and 44 three bedroom units. Those eligible to apply to live there must have income levels that are at 60% or below local median income.
State officials say Newport is getting this infusion of affordable housing because there has been no affordable housing constructed for over 15 years and local housing vacancy rates vary from near zero to absolute zero.
