I’m retired now as a pharmacist. Still keep my license in case I get to do some relief work, but spent a respectable 15 years in the field, hospital and community retail.
The truth behind the friendly smile is absolutely abominable. Closest I could empathize with being a prostitute going to work each day and having to support a system that has nothing to do with patient well being. It is all about profit. I came home so many days feeling dirty and damned if there is a higher court, my ethics compromised, but was slaved to the system if I was to feed my family.
There is a great division in healthcare, and probably in other disciplines. The guys and girls on the front line have some semblance of an ideal before it is beaten out of most of them. What is driving the dynamic over their head is cold and ruthless. It is all about extracting every penny from you as possible. Nothing more auspicious than someone dying of cancer. Profits to be made.
“Go Fund Me” ads on a billboard to beg for the half million dollars to pay for a liver transplant for the guy’s daughter says about all that needs to be said as to where we are as a society. Like you correctly said, either you pay or you do without.
Hope any of us can live through this.
