At a recent candidate forum I attended, sponsored by the Newport Chamber of Commerce, candidates were asked if they support the Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Measure 21-186. I was pleased to hear that all six candidates agreed on the issues as lined out in Measure 21-186 and agreed that Lincoln County needs to address these issues now, not later.
Public Safety is an essential function in every community and Lincoln County is no exception. Criminals are aware that Lincoln County lacks 24/7 patrol coverage and crime activity is at its highest during those hours. Mental illness and substance abuse is among the highest cause of Lincoln County’s crime activity and it takes multiple resources to address the issue.
Public safety, education and essential health services are the fundamental building blocks of a prosperous society, and improper funding of these core elements is detrimental.
Our youth are surrounded by drug use and it is easily accessible at every age. Our law enforcement is understaffed and lacking the resources to address the issues at the level they need to.
As a lifetime member of this community and my desire to see my children and grandchildren be members of this community, I want to make it a better place to live, which is why I support Measure 21-186.
