The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble will present its annual Spring Concert at the First Presbyterian Church of Newport on Saturday, May 12, beginning at 2 PM. The concert is a benefit for Lincoln County Habitat for Humanity and Food Share.
The program will feature tips of the sombrero to Cinco De Mayo, plus marches, medleys, show tunes, trips to Scotland and the merry old land of Oz.
A highlight of the concert will be a medley of tunes from the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, which, besides the expected Somewhere Over The Rainbow, features a whimsical tuba solo on If I Only Had A Brain. Also on the program are tributes to Glenn Miller and Aaron Copland; the evocative Ashokan Farewell featured in Ken Burns Civil War documentary; highlights from Man of La Mancha; plus a couple of marches and a paso doble.
The concert is free but a donation of $5/person and $10/family would be appreciated. Proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity. Non-perishable food items will also be collected for the Newport Food Pantry.
The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble is composed of about 35 professional and amateur musicians from the central Oregon coast, and has provided concert band entertainment for more than two decades. The band plays several concerts per year throughout the region: seasonal celebration December concert in Yachats, Spring concerts in Florence and Newport, Waldport High School graduation, and a house concert at Florentine Estates.
No auditions are required to join the band. Rehearsals are Monday nights during the school year, alternately in Waldport and Florence. Most of the members are adult, but high school students make up about a third of the band. For further information, please visit the web site at http://www.snagglebunnytribe.net/PCWE_Home.
As part of the Bands outreach program, we provide scholarships to local music students, mainly from Newport, Waldport and Siuslaw high schools. Persons interested in applying for a scholarship should contact the music teacher at this or her local school.
