Members of Newport Fire Department honored at Annual Awards Banquet
On Saturday, April 28, Newport Fire Department held its annual awards banquet at the Hallmark Resort. The banquet was well attended by members of the Department past and present, along with members of the City Council and Rural Fire Board Directors. A portion of the evening’s celebration was dedicated to honoring members whose service to the community and the department over the last year is deserving of special recognition.
Three people received Chief’s Awards for their support of Newport Fire Department. They include Lt. Richard Giles, Mayor Sandy Roumagoux, and Assistant Chief Bob Harvey.
The Rookie of the Year Award was presented to Firefighter Travis Wolcott. Travis joined the Department in June 2017. Travis completed the recruit firefighter academy, and has been active in training and assisting with special projects at the fire station.
Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Firefighter/EMT Larry Wooten. Larry has been with NFD since 2013. He consistently responds to calls, attends training and helps with special events. Firefighter Wooten’s calm and understated demeanor is a welcome addition to incident scenes and around the station. Larry, who also volunteers with Newport Police Department, was also awarded this year’s Alma B. Howes Award as The City of Newport’s Volunteer of the Year.
Newport Fire Department congratulates all of our award winners and thanks all our members for their contribution to making our community safer.
