Newport is finally having the crosswalk pedestrian lights installed at a new Coast Highway crosswalk at San Bay O Circle, just south of Fred Meyer. The flashing lights are activated when a pedestrian pushes the button. When traffic stops the pedestrian crosses. As an added safety feature ODOT earlier created a refuge island in the middle of the pavement that the pedestrian can use while waiting for traffic to clear and then complete the crossing.
The council also approved identical pedestrian refuge islands along Coast Street at Bay Street, Abby Street, NW 3rd, 10th and 15th. So, slowing down the traffic on Newport’s main thoroughfare will make Newport much more pedestrian friendly.
