I noticed the Sheriff recently announced that he was looking at a levy to make all the citizens of Lincoln County safer. He is proposing 46 cents per thousand but for some reason leaves out the total amount of the levy. You only do this if your trying to hide the high total amount and it sounds nicer as only “so much per thousand.”
The proposed Levy should have been labeled “Jail Enhancement”, since most of the personnel being proposed are for the Jail. The Sheriff proposes NINE (9) corrections officers to back fill from a loss 9 years ago. This is obviously a major cost in personnel. He also proposes release officers, receptionist, mental health (volunteer coordinator to root out the causes of why people offend) workers all for the Jail.
He does throw in restoring some patrol personnel to resume 24 hour coverage and someone on the Drug team – something that hasn’t been part of the Sheriff’s Office for a long time. This is a good idea in an otherwise watered-downed Jail Levy.
Based on the Levy as proposed, the ”Jail” will be a safer place, not the community. The Jail Levy will pass on costs to all taxpayers including property owners that have rentals. This will result in Higher Rents for citizens of Lincoln County. But the folks that are incarcerated will feel better about life because of the support they get in the Sheriff’s Jail. What a Great Deal!!
