As an update to Saturday’s head-on crash at the Ona Beach curve, State Police logs show that a black Mazda was headed north on Highway 101 when it drifted toward the edge of the pavement – the driver over-corrected and swerved across the center line and into the path of an oncoming silver Pontiac Sunbird.
The impact caused numerous injuries including one severe injury to a passenger in the Mazda who was airlifted to a Portland trauma unit. Several others in the Mazda were also injured.
Police say the occupants of the Sunbird escaped with minor injuries.
Driver of the Mazda, Gerardo Cortez, 34, of Woodburn, was arrested for drunk driving – his breathalyzer test was three times the legal limit. Cortez was also charged with five counts of assault, four counts of reckless driving and five counts of reckless endangering.
As it turned out it was a passenger in Cortez’s car that was air ambulances to a Portland trauma unit.
