Very late Tuesday evening Lincoln City Police responded to a report that a vehicle hit a pedestrian in the Walgreens parking lot at NW 40th. While officers were responding to the scene, it was reported the vehicle had left northbound on Highway 101. Upon arrival at the scene, police learned that a second vehicle was involved in the crash and was still present. The driver of the second vehicle had severe injuries and was located outside his vehicle. The driver was life-flighted to a Portland area Hospital. The driver’s passengers, his wife and infant child were not injured.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies located the suspect vehicle a short time later on Highway 101 north of Lincoln City. The driver of the vehicle, 68 year old Perry G. Nicolopoulos of Puyallup, Washington (near Seattle) showed signs of impairment and was initially taken into custody on a charge of drunk driving.
Police activated the Lincoln County Crash and Crime Teams to assist in the investigation. Investigators from the Lincoln City Police Department, Oregon State Police, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Newport Police Department and Toledo Police Department worked through the night investigating the crash.
Based on evidence collected, Perry Nicolopoulos was arrested on additional charges of Attempted Murder, Assault 1, Assault 2, Assault 3, Reckless Endangering and Failure to perform Duties of a driver-caused injury and was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail.
The victim and the family of the other car are from the Portland area and their names are not being released at this time.
