Message from Lincoln County Schools

This message is being released as part of the teamwork conducted between Lincoln County School District and the Lincoln City Police Department.

On February 8, 2018, Lincoln City Police and Taft 7-12 received a written message raising concern of a possible school shooting. Lincoln City Police, Newport Police, Toledo Police, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office worked with the school district to investigate the threat.

The school district sent messages to its families and staff during the night to keep everyone informed as the investigation allowed. At 10:00 p.m. police were still investigating the threat and the school district decided to cancel Lincoln City schools for Friday, February 9, 2018.

Police worked throughout the night and after interviewing almost 40 students do not believe the threat was real. If there is any additional information about the investigation, it will be released by the Lincoln City Police Department.

We look forward to seeing everyone back in school Monday morning.

We also want to remind our community that Lincoln County School District has joined Oregon’s statewide school safety tip line, called SafeOregon. SafeOregon is a place for students to report safety concerns involving school such as threats, violence, bullying, drugs, self-harm, or cyber-bullying. There are several options for sharing these safety concerns:
911: Use 911 to report an emergency.  SafeOregon does not replace 911.
Talk: If it is not an emergency, talk to a trusted adult such as a parent, school teacher, principal, counselor, coach, school resource officer, or another school staff member about your concerns.

* Tipline: Use the SafeOregon Tip Line. SafeOregon is a statewide secure place for students, parents, staff, and others to confidentially share information of a potential threat to school or student safety. Trained staff are available 24/7/365.
