The Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean, under the direction of Maestro Adam Flatt, will present a program featuring music of great American composers this Saturday night at 7:30p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2:00p.m. in the Alice Silverman Theatre at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
The concert opens with Aaron Copland’s composition El Salon Mexico. Copland was referred to by his peers and critics as “the Dean of American Composers.” The open, slowly changing harmonies in much of his music are typical of what many people consider to be the sound of American music, evoking the vast American landscape and pioneer spirit. Charles Tomlinson Griffes was one of the most important American composers at the beginning of the 20th century and the symphony will perform his composition The White Peacock.
One of two special guest performers for the concert include composer and violin/viola player Kenji Bunch who hails from here in Oregon (Portland). Heralded as ‘A Composer to Watch’ by the New York Times, Bunch has quickly emerged as one of the most prominent American composers of his generation. He will perform his own composition “Verso” for solo violin, solo viola, harpsichord and string orchestra.
The concert will concluded with two numbers by Samuel Barber an American composer of orchestral, opera, choral, and piano music and one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century. Music critic Donal Henahan stated that “Probably no other American composer has ever enjoyed such early, such persistent and such long-lasting acclaim as Barber.” The two numbers performed by the Symphony will feature his Adagio for Strings and Symphony No. 1.
The Symphony is pleased to welcome a second special guest performer nationally recognized violinist Erik Peterson who is a member of the Colorado Symphony and Ivy Street Ensemble in Denver. As Chintimini Chamber Music Festival’s Director Peterson was soloist on Adam’s concert in December of 2006 after which Adam became Music Director of the Newport Symphony and is now in his tenth year!
Performances are this Saturday at 7:30pm with a pre-concert talk by Maestro Adam Flatt at 6:45p.m. Sunday’s performance commences at 2:00p.m. Following each concert will again feature a special complimentary Wine Down featuring select wine from the Flying Dutchman Winery of Otter Rock plus delicious array of food items. Stay and mingle with Adam, our guests artists and our orchestra members!
