And here it is….
House Fire at the 600 block of NW Nye Street
At 5:24 AM Thursday morning Newport Fire Department was dispatched to a house on fire in the 600 block of NW Nye Street near NW 6th. First arriving firefighters found the back half of the home totally engulfed in flames. The building was a vacant home and had not been (legally) occupied since the mid-1970s.
Fire crews quickly deployed hose lines to protect nearby houses. Due to the dilapidated state of the structure, and the level of risk to firefighters, no crews entered the home and it was allowed to burn down. The fire was contained to the building of origin and no occupied homes were damaged.
Newport Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from Toledo Fire Department, and Depoe Bay Fire District.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Both this house and the one pictured next door, belong to a quite elderly woman in Portland who has been legally dueling with the city for years over what to do about them. Both have been well used by the homeless as make-do shelters to get out of the weather. Both are reported to be unsecured and are uninhabitable under city and county rules, regulations and ordinances.
