Man swept off Depoe Bay rocks earlier this week, and presumed drowned, identified
Oregon State Police was notified by the Mexican Consulate that they had made contact with the victim’s family in Michoacán, Mexico. The victim has been identified as Jose Alfredo Rodriguez Alvarez, age 46. Rodriguez Alvarez is presumed deceased after he was swept away near the Depoe Bay “Spouting Horn” wave blow-hole across the street from the town’s city center.
It appeared to many that Alvarez did not fully appreciate the danger he put himself in, by climbing over a stone wall and then down onto the rocks near the Spouting Horn. The horn/blow-hole was putting up more violent surge-water sprays than have been seen in years. Rodriguez Alvarez was quickly swept off the rocks and disappeared into the churning mass of storm waters below.
