10 artists are selected under the theme of “Paper and Fiber; Opening reception set for January 5, 5-7pm
The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts presents the third annual “Mayors’ Show” from January 5 to 27 in the Runyan Gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center. The 2018 “Mayors’ Show” will include 10 artists selected from the 2017 “PushPin Show” at the VAC in December, presented under the theme of “Paper and Fiber.” Newport Mayor Sandra Roumagoux, Lincoln City Mayor Don Williams and OCCA VAC Director Tom Webb worked together to make the artist selections. A First Friday opening reception for the “Mayors’ Show” will be on January 5 at the VAC (777 NW Coast Dr.), 5-7pm, with an artist talk at 6pm during the reception.
“We are excited about the mix of creative approaches and artist backgrounds. This will be a dynamic show!” says Roumagoux. “I am looking forward to seeing the artists’ expanded work in the January exhibition.”
Artists selected for the 2018 “Mayors’ Show” include Laurie Card, Norm Ferber, Julia Goos, Helen Abe-Ichien, Freyjah Krantz, Jeri Le, Kit Macfarland, Jared Matthys, Sara Siggelkow and Tash Wesp.
Artists in the 2018 “Mayors’ Show” span various generations.
Kit Macfarland moved to Newport over 28 years ago. “I was in the original ‘PushPin Show, and I here I am again,” says Macfarland.
Freyjah Krantz is13 years old and in eighth grade at Newport Middle School. “I’ve been drawing for longer than I can remember,” says Krantz. “I used to draw on the walls when I was little. My mom decided to buy me art supplies so I would stop drawing on the walls. I started taking formal art classes in the sixth grade when we moved to Newport from Portland. I’ve been taking Art Fridays classes at the VAC for all three years they’ve been running. I also took classes at Art 101 and at school.”
“We’re excited to have younger artists in the ‘Mayors’ Show,” says Webb. “Besides Freyjah, Jared Matthys is a freshman in high school. Both are very talented and aspiring artists.”
The Runyan Gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-5pm
