The private sector seems to be winning the battle (so far) over how many internet program distribution companies will be making the most money. And those distribution firms will probably raise internet prices for just about everyone since the private sector tends to routinely raise prices without giving anyone an understandable explanation. They can do it. Afterall, it’s the FREE market. And to take it a step further, without sufficient competition for things we really need, those prices always go up. And one of those things we really need is the internet. And by that we mean THE internet. Not SOME internet.
The FCC’s 3 to 2 vote Thursday turned the internet back over to the Wild West dreams of a money rush for large corporations who would get their foot in the door for all kinds of mischief. It’s a recipe to give the foxes the right to “guard” the hen house. And by “guard” we mean guarding their own “divine right” to limitless profits. Again – the FREE Market. We’ve seen what the free market can do to medical care. To college tuition. The price of critically needed prescription drugs. The same forces are waiting to swing in to action and prey on the internet.
Adequate information is absolutely vital to a healthy democracy. This country is waaaay over-polarized as it is without people we don’t even know or will ever see or talk to, determining what we see and hear and what we don’t see and hear. And they’ll start selecting what’s “most profitable” for THEM at the expense of OUR country and our DUTY to responsibly participate in its governance.
There is no such thing as FREEDOM-LITE or MOSTLY OKAY water. Likewise, it’s either THE internet, or not.
