For the past few years, OCCC faculty and staff, along with student groups and the Student Nurses Organization, have collected gift cards from generous community members to give to local teens in foster care.
There are 77 teens in foster care/group homes in Lincoln County. This year, our goal is to provide at least one gift card per teen, or (as in previous years) two gift cards per teen. The cards are available in $10 increments from either Fred Meyer or Walmart. Oregon DHS recommends these two businesses, as the teens can purchase a multitude of things from either store.
There is also a “tasty way” to support the gift-card drive this year – visit the Gift Card Fundraiser Bake Sale, coming Monday, Nov. 20 and Tuesday, Dec. 5 to OCCC’s Central County Campus, in Newport. The sale will be held from noon to 4 p.m. each day, and will include vegan and gluten-free options!
Foster Teenagers are the most overlooked group when it comes to Christmas presents; everyone wants to donate that doll or truck, but teens are difficult to buy for, and far too often they are forgotten. Oregon Coast Community College Student Clubs, join forces with Lincoln County Social Services of Newport during the holidays to help make a personal, positive difference in the lives of Foster Teens.
If you would like to help this year, please drop off any dollar amount donation or Fred Meyer/Wal-Mart Gift Card in $10 increments at Oregon Coast Community College Nursing Department (second floor) Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from now til Monday, Dec. 11.
