A fond farewell…and a big one to boot…

Waldport Mayor Susan Woodruff (far right) and others help dedicate the trailhead sign for the John Mare’ Trail to acknowledge John and Margaret Mare’s contributions to the Waldport Community.

Provided by Jim Fitzgerald

John and Margaret Mare´who have been so active in Waldport civic affairs are moving back to Tucson this week. They established the Green Bike program in town and ran it for years before Rick Hill took it over. They also founded the Waldport Walkers hiking group, still active in Waldport. John also volunteers at Cape Perpetua and has been a member of just about every trails committee in the state. He also volunteers at the Newport Aquarium. The community will miss them. Senitila McKinley had a dinner for them at Da Noble House on Sunday, and on Monday our Waldport Walkers had a celebration at the City of Waldport unveiled the sign at the foot of the local Woodland Trail, built mainly because of the Mare´s influence, with the new name “John Mare´Woodland Trail” on the sign. Many hikers attended the ceremony where Mayor Susan Woodruff unveiled the sign.
