“ABOUT SCHMIDT” TO PLAY AT NEWPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY

About Schmidt will be shown at the Newport Public Library on Tuesday, November 14 at 6:30 p.m. Based on the 1996 novel by Louis Begley, this 2002 film tells the story of Warren Schmidt (Jack Nicholson), a man who has led a safe, predictable life working as an actuary with Woodmen of the World. After he retires, he is forced to take a hard look at his wife, his life and his relationship with his estranged daughter. An often hilarious series of events follow as Schmidt embarks on an unpredictable RV journey to attend his daughter’s wedding in Denver, where he meets her future mother-in-law Roberta (Kathy Bates). Both Nicholson and Bates were nominated for their performances as Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The film won two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.

This movie is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at 541.265.2153 or go to www.newportlibrary.org.

NEWPORT LIBRARY READING CIRCLE TO DISCUSS “A MAN CALLED OVE”

The Newport Public Library’s Reading Circle will discuss “A Man Called Ove” on Tuesday, November 14 at noon. Ove is a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. When a young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at 541.265.2153 or go to www.newportlibrary.org.
