Lights, camera, action and music! This weekend the Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean heads to the movie theater to perform music from some classic screen gems!
Under the direction of Conductor Adam Flatt, now in his tenth year as Music Director of the symphony, the Orchestra will feature Dimtri Shostakovich’s musical score from “The Gadfly”, the classic Russian film from the 1950’s. Then a rousing adventure film The Sea Hawk from 1940 starring Errol Flynn with a classic movie score by famed Hollywood composer Eric Wolfgang Korngold. who is generally credited with “inventing” the syntax of orchestral film music.
Guiding us through this cinematic history of music and film is Edmund Stone, host of “The Score.” He’s on All Classical Portland radio and aired on over 50 stations across the country. Stone is a classically trained Shakespearean actor from England whose background includes a variety of stage and screen roles. With deep connections to Hollywood and the classical music community, Edmund is the ideal host for this weekly foray into the world of celluloid and melody.
Also on the program is Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s Suite-Concertino for Bassoon and Orchestra, op. 16 featuring Newport Symphony’s own first bassoonist Chad Alexander plus Maurice Ravel’s beautiful Menuet Antique.
The concert on Saturday night is at 7:30pm with a pre-concert preamble by conductor Flatt at 6:45pm. The Sunday matinee 2:00pm. Following each concert everyone is invited to a complimentary “Wine Down Reception” featuring wines by the Flying Dutchman Winery and delicious nummies.
