Solar eclipse brings man-eating plant to Newport!

Little Shop of Horrors opens Friday, August 18 th … just in time for the total solar eclipse

Red Octopus Theatre Company is excited to present Howard Ashman & Robert Menken’s deliciously malicious musical Little Shop of Horrors at the Newport Performing Arts center, August 18 – September 3, 2017.

When meek, geeky Seymour Krelborn finds a strange and interesting plant (during a total eclipse of the sun) his life begins to change in ways he never could have imagined … but at what cost? As those around him begin disappearing in gruesome ways, how far will he go to satisfy the cravings of his blood-sucking, carnivorous pal? And in the end, will he be able to save the world from the ghastly, nasty plant and its sinister spores?

A menacingly mouthwatering musical masterpiece – the Broadway and Hollywood smash hit sci-fi horror comedy rock musical, Little Shop Of Horrors, has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 30 delicious years.
Director Melissa MacDonald and Music Director Howard Lackey are thrilled to bring this electrifying cult classic to the Oregon Coast, and they’ve assembled an incredibly talented cast! Some of the coast’s most sought-after talent will be on stage, bringing this zesty musical to life.

Building a man-eating plant is no small feat! Local carpenter and creative craftsman Joshua Lawrence took on the daunting task of building the enormous puppet featured in the second half of the production. A labor of love, what began as a wood and wire frame in Lawrence’s backyard has become a fully articulated, mechanical marvel… well worth the price of admission.

The production opens Friday, August 18th and continues every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday thru September 3 rd (Thurs-Sat at 7pm, Sundays at 2pm). Tickets are $18 ($16 for Students/Seniors) and are available in person at the Newport Performing Arts Center box office (777 W. Olive Street, Newport, OR 97365), by phone (541-265-ARTS), or online at www.coastarts.org .
