On Wednesday, August 2nd, at approximately 5:00 PM, OSP responded to a report of a 3 vehicle head on collision on HWY 20 around milepost 31 in Lincoln County. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2015 Chevy Equinox SUV was westbound with a 2005 Honda Odyssey van traveling in the same direction a short distance behind the Chevy. For unknown reasons, an eastbound 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup crossed the center line and crashed head on into the Chevy. The Honda was unable to stop and crashed into the other 2 vehicles the Dodge caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed in flames.
The two occupants of the Dodge were pronounced deceased at the scene and positive identification is still pending. The driver of the Chevy has been identified as 52 year old Michael STEENKOLK and his passenger, 48 year old Kathleen OLIVE, both from Toledo. STEENKOLK was pronounced deceased at the scene and OLIVE was airlifted to Emanuel Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her current condition is not known. The driver of the Honda was identified as 17 year old Lucy JAEGER and her passenger as 20 year old Joseph SCHMIDT both from Corvallis. They received minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Samaritan Hospital in Newport for evaluation.
Two trucks taking the Highway 180 bypass around the wreck are partially blocking the highway due to not being able to drive under a railroad bridge. The trucks are pulled over as far as they can get. Motorists are getting around the two semi’s but it’s slow.
Highway 20 still shut down at Ellmaker and Cline Hill. Detour to Highway 180 east and west to get around the crash scene. But it’s slow. Might consider taking Highway 18 or 34.
Report of a three vehicle crash at Highway 20 and Cline Hill Loop, at the west end of the loop. It is reported that the first two vehicles hit head on, and a third vehicle T-boned one of the other two. One vehicle is on fire.
Accident is a multiple fatal. Report of two subjects trapped in two different vehicles, and a subject with a possibly broken leg. One of the trapped subjects is in the same vehicle that has flames coming from the engine compartment.
Air ambulance being summoned to the scene. Toledo requesting fire response from Philomath Fire as mutual aid.
Newport Fire requested to cover Toledo’s district. Philomath is sending an extrication crew to the scene.
Callers now saying that one of the involved vehicles has exploded.
Arriving Toledo Fire crews are saying there are two fatalities, one female on the ground, and others injured.
Ambulance crew on scene is cancelling the other two responding ambulances. LifeFlight is landing near Ellmaker State Park.
