“Just Imagine: Short Films from Newport High School” to run at Newport Visual Arts Center
Thirteen films by 24 students to be shown in the VAC’s Media Room; Opening reception scheduled for Friday, June 9, 5-7pm
The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts hosts “Just Imagine: Short Films from Newport High School” from June 9 to July 1 in the Media Room at the Newport Visual Arts Center. Thirteen films developed by 24 Newport High School students will be shown continuously on a 30-minute loop during regular Media Room hours. An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 9, 5-7pm, with students talking about their work at 6:30pm.
Currently under the direction of instructor Holly Schell, the Newport High Video Production program was established in 2004 and includes two yearlong classes. In “Beginning Video Production,” students learn the full scope of the video-production process, from storyboarding and script-writing to filming and editing. Students work in groups to create several short films. Some student projects focus on telling a good story, while others concentrate on creating a music montage. Some films work to make the world a better place through creating public service announcements.
In “Advanced Video Production,” which students can take more than once, students work to push their production skills to a new level. They interface with more advanced equipment, including lighting and green screens. Students develop advanced editing skills, including creating simple animation and adding special effects.
“We are excited to have the Newport High film students at the Visual Arts Center,” says OCCA VAC director Tom Webb. “Last year, we featured Newport High and Newport Middle School visual art students during June, a great month for student art work.”
The participating Newport High School students are Calvin Anderson, Flor Aparicio-Reyes, Brent Bacher, Juan Cuevas, Kai Daniels, Zach Doyle, Brady Driebergen, Nathan Eisler, Stormi Ferguson, Jackson Garrett, Ashley Hicks, Jonathan Ho, Sy Husing, Cai Johnson, Liz Lackey, Kaleigh Martinez, Matt Nicoson, Tucker Portlock, Zoe Richcreek Johnson, Kyle Rock, Ania Sacket, Chandler Turner, Tyler Walters and Katie Wilkinson.
