Gray’s Harbor’s twin main attractions, that hit the touring trail during the summer, have had more than a rocky start to their season. Both the Hawaiian Chieftain and Lady Washington are laid up with engine problems, the Lady Washington in Newport – the Hawaiian Chieftain in Crescent City. No word on why both ships came down with engine problems at the same time. To a land lubber, they might check the last load of fuel they took on.
But they’re trying to make the best of it. Repair crews are on site at both locations…the engineer bound for Crescent City making the trip all the way down from Newport! No word when the Chieftain will be able to sail north to Newport. Both tall ships were supposed to be in “performance mode” for the better part of a week here in Newport.
This has already had an effect on their tour schedule. Both were set to give tours, take folks for rides off shore of Newport and put on spirited at sea cannon-fire battles with each other.
The Tall Ships summer tour sails up and down the west coast through August.
