Celebrating a Century of Service:

In 2017, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Corps is celebrating a century of service as a commissioned officer corps.

The Corps traces its roots back to 1807 when President Thomas Jefferson established the Survey of the Coast, the Nation’s first scientific agency. On May 22, 1917, an act of Congress established the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as a commissioned service. This distinction allowed officers to be transferred to the armed services in times of war. Today, NOAA Corps officers command NOAA’s fleet of research and survey vessels and fly NOAA’s shoreline mapping and environmental observation aircraft, including the “hurricane hunter.” Officers ashore serve in positions throughout NOAA, supporting a wide variety of missions including disaster response, pollution monitoring, satellite and weather operations, and natural resource management.
