Newport Public Works says they’re out there trying to get a handle on how big the break it. Preliminarily they say it’s quite substantial. No estimate on how long it’ll take to fix. No word yet on what caused the break.
Newport is no different than most American cities – the pipes in the ground, coast to coast, are getting old and they need replacing. And the cost is astronomical. A few decades ago there was lots of federal money to do such projects – but no more. It’s caused LOCAL system development charges to push up the cost of new homes which are already out of reach of more than half of America’s families.
