Fundraiser at 1st Presbyterian Church for Newport Food Pantry – The need is huge…

Newport Food Pantry Fundraiser at 1st Presbyterian Church Sunday, Dec. 18th, 2pm,
227 NE 12th, Newport

Fundraiser at 1st Presbyterian Church, 227 NE 12th, Dec. 18th, 2pm

Imagine what would happen if you experienced a sudden illness that required an extended hospital stay. What if your place of employment found it necessary to cut back on or eliminate your services. Or your retirement funds shrink to miniscule proportions (17% of the Food Panties clientele), because of inflation and unexpected expenses. Or, like many in our county, the jobs that are available just don’t pay a living wage.

Those are realities that are faced by hundreds of our neighbors each and every day here in Newport. Many adults go without eating so their children (34% of the Food Pantries recipients are children) can have dinner. Asking for help is difficult. They want desperately to be self-sufficient.
One of the projects at the Newport Food Pantry, is Operation Snackpacks – serving 100 students each week. This is to nourish the body that nourishes the mind of one of most vulnerable population, our children. The backpack food program discretely provides “chronically hungry” children with food to take home over the weekends and holidays. The backpacks are stocked with nutritious, child-friendly, easy to prepare food and inconspicuously distributed to children on the last day of school before the weekend or holiday. In doing so, the child’s nutritional, mental, and overall well-being needs can be met week to week.

Money donations to the Newport Food Pantry will buy about one pound of food for every dollar donated. Also, with money donations, the Food Panty is able to purchase the kinds and types of food needed for their programs.

Donations, be them money or non-perishable foods, can be made to the Newport Food Pantry, on December 18th at 2 PM. at a free concert by The Oregon Coast Chorus, Sweet Adelines, and the Coastal-Aires Barbershop Chorus. Also performing are , High Tide NW and Vocal Point quartets. This will be their Sixth Annual Christmas Program, benefiting the Newport Food Pantry.

In this season of giving, come, donate and enjoy at the First Presbyterian Church in Newport (227 NE 12th ).  This program is a celebration of Christmas and holiday music sung in a cappella singing style. You may even want to join in the fun with one of our chorus’ this year!
