Lincoln City Police say their phones were lit up like a Christmas Tree in the 9 o’clock hour from frightened citizens who thought the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake was making a return engagement. Of course it wasn’t. But whatever it was sure scared the population pretty good.
Lincoln City 911 Dispatch said callers described it as a big boom and the ground shaking. One caller to News Lincoln County said it was the “big one” and they were “getting out of here.”
A little later in the evening Lincoln City Police dispatch reported that the 142nd Wing of the Oregon Air National Guard was training in the northwest area of the state.
To be sure, the jet fighters that the 142nd Fighter Wing uses can easily exceed the speed of sound in power dives and other maneuvers. And so it’s quite possible that somebody up there may have exceeded the speed limit over populated areas – breaking the sound barrier.
The Wing told News Lincoln County that they couldn’t comment but that they will have a public information officer available in the morning.
