The nonprofit Newport Sea Lion Docks Foundation is holding a silent auction this month at Bayscapes Gallery at 333 SW Bay Boulevard on the Bay Front. The Foundation recently replaced the sea lion docks that sit adjacent to Port Dock One, and are trying to complete the project by installing a public viewing platform running alongside the pier. This will separate the sea lion viewers from traffic using the pier to service fishing boats moored at its end.
The total cost of the project is almost $200,000 and the Foundation is just $40,000 short of that figure, and hope to have the platform in place next summer. The sea lion docks are a major tourist attraction for the City of Newport.
Foot Young, a world renowned US sculptor who now has his studios in Australia, has sent the Foundation seven marine mammal sculptures to help them raise those final funds. These consist on one large statue of a sea lion in jade cast marble, two smaller sea lion statues, and four small statues of manitees. These would normally retail at about $3,300 in all. You can view the display of statues at Bayscapes and write down a bid for the individual statues, or can send in a bid via the web site at www.newportsealiondocks.com where there are photographs and details of the individual pieces, or you can telephone Bayscapes at (541) 265 4017. A great opportunity to treat yourself, or to buy Christmas presents and to help with this great cause at the same time. The Auction will end on Sunday 27 November and the winners notified by the Foundation.
