Getting closer to playing God?

Because few new human powers will change the world as much as genomics (genetic engineering and sequencing) Wallace Kaufman wrote The Hunt for FOXP5: A Genomic Mystery Novel. He’ll talk about the promises and perils of genomics at Newport Public Library on Sunday, September 25 at 2 p.m. He says the talk will be short and understandable, but the ideas will be challenging.

He starts with the fact that we get information from science, but we get our values and beliefs from stories. Thus he joined with one of the world’s leading astro-biologists and biomolecular engineers, Dr. David Deamer, to write a story in which big ethical questions play out in the lives of characters from Oregon and Kazakhstan as they deal with the geopolitical consequences of genetic engineering.

The story takes place in Oregon and Kazakhstan. Kaufman lives near Newport and worked for 10 years in Kazakhstan.

The author will welcome comments, questions, especially from skeptics.
