Project Status Sept. 14, 2016
by Tim Gross, Director of Public Works/City Engineer
The siding and roofing are quickly going up on the new Aquatic Center building, but what you cannot see is the progress inside the building! Concrete floors for the new locker rooms will be poured over the next few days and parking will be restricted in the ADA spaces between the Recreation Center and 60+ Center beginning tomorrow, Sept 14th through Friday, September 16th. The rebar for the lap and recreation pools is being set, and concrete for the floors for the two pools will be poured within the next 2 weeks resulting in similar parking restrictions. Please excuse the inconvenience.
Now for all of the burning questions that I am sure you want to ask:
Q: Is the Aquatic Center going to be yellow?
A: No, the aquatic center will not be yellow. By happy coincidence, both the water sealer and the primer for the siding happen to be yellow. When the siding is complete, the painters will be along to paint the building a similar color as the existing Recreation Center.
Q: Is the current channel and spa still part of the construction?
A: Yes, they are. Through a generous donation from the Ken Doerfler Sr. Foundation, the City was able to keep the current channel and spa in the construction contract.
Q: When will the Aquatic Center be open to the public?
A: The City is scheduled to take possession of the completed project on December 24. Merry Christmas! A ribbon cutting grand opening celebration will be held soon after, in the early part of January.
Thank you for your patience. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please contact the City of Newport Public Works Department at 541-574-3366. Thank you.
