All three crewmen on board the Fishing Vessel McCalis were rescued Sunday afternoon at sea, about 8 miles west of Cape Blanco, off the southern Oregon coast.
The Coast Guard reports they intercepted a “Mayday” plea for help over the radio coming from the McCalis. The crewman said the vessel was taking on water and their onboard pumps were not keeping up. He said it was getting very close so they were getting ready to jump into a life raft.
A short while later two Coast Guard Motorlifeboats and a Coast Guard Helo arrived on scene. But the fog was so thick that the helo told the motorlifeboats to pick up the crewmen and take them into Coos Bay just up the coast.
The Coast Guard says the F/V McCalis is presumed sunk. They said they marked the spot where it probably would be going down so if the decision is made to bring her back up, they’ll know where to look. They didn’t say how deep it was 8 miles off Cape Blanco.
