11:59pm – Report of a possible missing kayaker(s) whose kayak came up empty on the beach near Waziata on the south side of Alsea Bay near the jaws. Two locals saw the kayak and retrieved it. Search and Rescue jet skis have been launched to search for the kayaker(s). Heavy fog is rolling in which will complicate any rescue attempt.
12:19pm – There is a phone number with the kayak.
12:20pm – Coast Guard has been asked to search from the Alsea River jaws south two miles. Very thick fog in the area.
12:24pm – Command Post set up on Corona Court.
12:35pm – Searchers on jet skis, on the beach and a Coast Guard Helo overhead are searching from Corona Court south along the shore.
12:42pm – The Forest Service says they found a car with a kayak rack on it, with Washington plates that match phone number and residence in Spokane, WA. Names also match – man and wife. Report from a Waldport resident says she saw two orange kayaks headed out at around 10:30am.
12:43pm – Another resident reported that an older male in a kayak was crabbing at around 9:15am. He was wearing a life jacket.
1:08pm – Regular search and rescue has been terminated due to extreme fog. However, the Coast Guard has a beach search team still looking. Their helicopter had to return to Newport due to extreme poor visibilities in the search area.
1:10pm – Coast Guard beach search team as well as a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Marine boat are continuing the search.
