4:05am – Yachats Fire-Rescue and Central Coast Fire raced south on 101 just after 4am this morning on a report of a big semi over the side at Preacher’s Corner – Milepost 168.
The driver of the empty wood chip truck took out a hundred feet of guard rail before going over the side about 30 feet. The cab was ‘smushed’ up against some trees, trapping the driver. It took rescuers three and a half hours to get him out. Once freed, the driver was talking and didn’t seem the worse for wear but he was non-the-less transported anyway to Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence to be checked out. So he got REAL lucky.
No word on what caused the veteran truck-driver to leave the road on “Preacher’s Corner” but there was recently new asphalt laid down through there which tends to be a little slippery until it cures. The road is also not banked on the curve so that adds to the mix, for sure.
Oregon State Police will likely kick out a news release later this morning.
Crews removing the wreck have the road down to one lane of alternating traffic. TripCheck.com says delays can range from 20 minutes to two hours. Happy Monday.
