Some thoughts to soothe the anxiety of the coast’s “Big One”

Although there had been news stories written for years fore-telling the likelihood of an erupting Cascadia “Big One,” along the California, Oregon and Washington coasts, it took an article in a New York magazine to make everyone believe it. It sorta falls under the heading that nobody local knows what they’re talking about – but hey! those “smarty-boots” on the East Coast are HOT! If THEY say it’s true there there MUST be a hazardous geo-monster lurking around “out there.”

All seriousness aside (for how could it be otherwise) another earthquake expert is telling everybody to chill – that there is no way to truly know when the next Cascadia event will happen. Here’s an article in The Oregonian saying we can’t really know if we’re even in an “era” during which the “Big One” will strike. But then he caps his observations with a graph by University of Oregon Professor of Geology and Geophysics Chris Goldfinger that shows a scientifically verified time line of previous subduction zone shakers. Read the article. Then look at the red bar graph. Click here and judge for yourself.
