April 12th seed starting with Penny McDermott’s 4th grade class at Sam Case Elementary and Master Gardener Apprentices. The instructors were proving to the next generation that food is not produced inside grocery stores!
Over 20 trays of various vegetables and herbs were planted with the assistance of Master Gardener Apprentices, Michael Christy and Nicole Bridgeman as the new Garden Coordinators and Liz Olsen (past coordinator/now mentor).
It was an overcast and slightly windy day with no rain. Everyone had an opportunity to pick the seeds they wanted to plant and also to learn more about that particular vegetable according to the seed packet.
In the days to come, the students will learn how to read analog and digital thermometers, take measurements in centimeters and inches and record all this and more in their observation logs.
This year, the 2nd grade class of Olivia Schroeder under Michael’s tutelage will be seed-starting the edible flower/pollinator plants for the YBLG garden.
