Got this photo from a neighbor who lives near 9th and Eads in Newport. Been bubbling up for a while. We called Newport Public Works and they’re enroute to the scene saying “It sounds like a broken water main.”
A lot of Newport underground utilties are approaching their “end of lifespan” status. The city has been feverishly exploring grant opportunities (rather than dramatically raising water/sewer rates) with some degree of success but it’s hard when the system has been taken for granted for so long. Public Works Director Tim Gross was hired a few years back and he’s spent a lot of time assessing the city’s infrastructure, both water and sewer, and has been attacking some of the worst stuff first. But he always says, “There’s a lot of old pipes out there and you never know when another one is going to fail.”
Well, here’s another one and Gross & Co. are headed out there to fix it.
