A terrible head-on crash in Tillamook County killed two people and completely shut down Highway 101 just north of Cannon Beach mid-afternoon Saturday.
Preliminary information indicates a Hyundai sport utility was traveling southbound on Highway 101 when it crossed over the centerline and struck a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe head-on. After the impact both vehicles came to rest on the highway.
The driver of the Hyundai, Gregory HERON, and his passenger, Martha HERON, both age 64 and from Manzanita, were pronounced deceased. The driver of the Chevrolet, Diana FEKE, age 57, and Jethro FEKE, age 59, both of West Linn, suffered non-life threatening injuries. Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Highway 101 was closed for about three and a half hours while the investigation was conducted.
In this era of aging Baby Boomers and cellphone texting, it’s always a good idea to look up the road at oncoming traffic to see who’s drifting close to the center line and adjust accordingly. It won’t prevent all head-on crashes but some folks might get lucky and avoid a crash or get just a sideswipe.
