Siletz and Toledo Firefighters converged on Siletz Valley School Monday night on a report of a building fire just south of the main school building. Turned out to be what the kids call “The Play Shed” – a three sided rectangular building used for basketball for the kids at recess during rainy days. The building looked to be a total loss.
The building, maybe 100′ south of the main school building, was fully engulfed in flame, posing a huge challenge to Siletz Firefighters who called Toledo Fire to come up and help them put it out. Toledo Fire was also able to ensure flaming sparks and debris debris, wafting up into the air, did not land on the roof of the main school building and catch it on fire as well. Although there didn’t seem to be any wind at the time, fires create their own breezes when they burn this hot.
Firefighters finally knocked the blaze down, but again, there’s probably not much left of the building. The fire was at night as you can see and fires can get a big head start in an area behind other buildings where people can’t see flames or flickering shadows. The building is probably insured and quite likely can be rebuilt in time for fall classes.
No word yet on a cause. Here’s a link to Michele Johnson’s video of the fire, seen from the sidelines on Frank James Streets. It’s posted to The Lincoln County Scan Facebook page. Click here.
