Newport City Hall has applied to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for financial help in bailing out residents who lost their homes last December along the north side of NE 70th.
City Manager Spencer Nebel says the application has been made on behalf of those homeowners which would basically buy out the homes and the lots they sit (sat) on so that nothing could ever be built there again. The city would also shore up the hillside so future storms would not cause the edge of the current drop off to work its way south toward the street.
Although Lincoln County did not qualify for FEMA disaster funds for private property damage (there wasn’t enough of it), because Tillamook County did qualify, and because Lincoln County borders it, Lincoln County was eligible to apply for the funds. Nebel said there are other jurisdictions applying for the same money so it’s quite competitive.
Nebel says it may be a few months before the city gets notified as to whether it got the FEMA grant.
