If the Newport City Council goes along with the city manager’s suggestion, the Newport Farmer’s Market will set up shop this Spring and Summer on Lee Street, from Highway 101 on the east to 2nd Street on the West. The relocation from last year’s site was required because of complaints of Farmer’s Market customers filling up the parking spaces of stores on 101 north of 2nd. So, for the upcoming Spring and Summer seasons, the Farmer’s Market will be moved slightly to the south on Lee Street, IF the council approves it this coming Monday. Other options are possible but they come with their own substantial logistical and parking problems.
The Lee Street option comes with a lot of parking because businesses along Lee near 7th are largely closed on the weekends which creates a lot of wide open asphalt throughout the area.
Being on Lee for the Spring/Summer would be a one time thing. There should be enough area cleared of new pool construction materials, tools and equipment to allow the Farmers Market to resume its perch on Angle on the east side of 101, right up against the southeast side of City Hall starting in April or May of 2017.
